What To Know About Getting a Tax Refund

The Virginia Department of Taxation has issued a release informing taxpayers that processing times for personal income tax returns may take longer due to extra steps being taken to ensure refunds are remitted to the rightful owners. As part of the additional safeguards, on receiving an individual income tax return, the department may mail a letter to the taxpayer inquiring as to whether he filed a return. Additional documentation to verify the taxpayer’s identity and the information claimed on the return may also be requested. Taxpayers are urged to respond quickly to avoid delay in processing returns. The release also addresses the reasons a paper check may be received instead of a direct deposit. Taxpayers can check the status of their state personal income tax refunds through the Online Lookup service (taxpayers will need to enter a Social Security Number (SSN), the tax year of the return filed, and the amount of refund expected) or by calling (804) 367-2486 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).

To check the status of your refund:

Both options are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You’ll need:

  • Your Social Security number
  • The year of the tax return you filed
  • Amount of the refund you’re expecting

How long will it take to get your refund?

As refund fraud resulting from identify theft has become more widespread, extra steps are being taken to review all individual income tax returns to be sure refunds go to the rightful owners. Additional safeguards can mean that it takes longer to process your refund.

General refund processing times during filing season:

  • Electronically filed returns: Up to 4 weeks
  • Paper filed returns: Up to 8 weeks
  • Returns sent by certified mail: Allow an additional 3 weeks
