Tax Scam
The IRS has issued a formal warning against new telephone and email phishing scams that are specifically targeting residents of Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. As we near the filing season deadline, scammers are constantly evolving their tactics and trying to deceive innocent taxpayers.

These email phishing scams are asking for verification of the last four digits of social security numbers and encouraging victims to click on a provided link by citing potential tax fraud. These criminals specifically state that there’s a special effort underway for Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia residents and suggest that recent data breaches may be involved.

As a reminder to all of our clients, the IRS does not initiate emails requesting personal or financial identity verification through email. If you suspect you may have received a call or email fraudulently posing as the IRS, report it directly to the IRS by sending it to phishing@irs.gov. Taxpayers can read more on these phishing scams and how to go about reporting and protecting yourself here.
