Reporting and Tax deadlines

Feb 28th: Employers File Information Returns with IRS

File information returns with the IRS, including Forms 1098, 1099 and W-2G for payments made during 2011.

File Form W-3 with Copy A of all Forms W-2 issued for 2011.

File Form 8027 if you are a large food or beverage establishment.

File Form 2290 and pay the tax for vehicles first used in January.

Farmers and Fisherman: File 2011 Form 1040 and pay any tax due. However, you have until Apr 17 to file if you paid your 2011 estimated tax payments by Jan 17, 2012.

March 15th: Corporate Tax Returns Due

Corporations: File Form 1120 for 2011calendar year and pay any tax due. For automatic 6-month extension, file Form 7004 and deposit estimated tax.

S Corporations: File Form 1120S for 2011 calendar year and pay any tax due. Furnish a copy of Sch. K-1 to each shareholder. File Form 2553 to elect S Corporation status beginning with calendar year 2012. File Form 2553 to elect to be treated as an S Corporation beginning with calendar year 2012.

Employers: Deposit payroll tax for Feb. if the monthly deposit rule applies.

Note:  These tax due dates are based on Calendar Year Taxpayers.  If you are a Fiscal Year Taxpayer, you should calculate your quarterly due dates based on your fiscal year end date.  Estimated tax payment due dates are the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th months of the corporate tax year.

April 17th: It's Tax Deadline Day


Individuals: File 2011 Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ. For automatic 6-month extension file Form 4868 and deposit estimated tax. Pay the first installment of 2012 estimated tax.

Household Employers: File Schedule H with Form 1040 if you paid $1,700 or more to a household employee.

Partnerships: File 2011 Form 1065 and furnish a copy of Sch. K-1 to each partner.

Electing Large Partnerships: File 2011 Form 1065 calendar year return.

Corporations: Deposit the first installment of your estimated tax for 2012.

Employers: Deposit payroll tax for March if the monthly deposit rule applies.

May 10th - 1Q Form 941 Due

File Form 941 for the first quarter of 2012.  This due date applies for calendar year taxpayers and only if you deposited the tax for the quarter in full and on time.

Note:  If you are a Fiscal Year Taxpayer, you should calculate your quarterly due dates based on your fiscal year end date. 

May 15th - 990s Due

May 15th is the deadline for all calendar year exempt organizations file Forms 990, 990-PF and 990-T.
 
Before you mail any check to the Internal Revenue Service, be sure to complete the following:

  • "Note the reason for the payment, the form number and the year of the return for which the check is being sent. For example, "balance due on Form 1040 for 2009."
  • "Include your social security number or your employer identification number if you operate as a business.
  • "Make all checks payable to the U.S. Treasury.

You may file a five month extension.

June 15th: 2Q Estimated Tax Payment Due

Individuals:  Pay the second installment of estimated tax for 2012. 


Corporations: Deposit the second installment of your 2012 estimated tax.   Note:  This due date is based on Calendar Year Taxpayers.  If you are a Fiscal Year Taxpayer, you should calculate your quarterly due dates based on your fiscal year end date.  Estimated tax payment due dates are the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th months of the corporate tax year.

June 15th: Individuals Outside the U.S. File 1040

Individuals Outside the U.S.  File 2010 Form 1040 with the Internal Revenue Service.

August 10th - 2Q Form 941 Due

File Form 941 for the second quarter of 2012.  This due date applies for calendar year taxpayers and only if you deposited the tax for the quarter in full and on time.

Note:  If you are a Fiscal Year Taxpayer, you should calculate your quarterly due dates based on your fiscal year end date. 

Sept 17th: Extended Partnership & Corporate Returns Due

Partnerships:  File 2011 Form 1065 if you timely requested a 5-month extension. 


Corporations:  File calendar year 2011 Form 1120 or 1120S if you timely requested a 6-month extension.

Sept 17th: 3Q Estimated Tax Payments Due

Individuals:  Pay the third installment of estimated tax for 2012. 


Corporations:  Deposit the third installment of your 2012 estimated tax.   Note:  This due date is based on Calendar Year Taxpayers.  If you are a Fiscal Year Taxpayer, you should calculate your quarterly due dates based on your fiscal year end date.  Estimated tax payment due dates are the 15th day of the 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th months of the corporate tax year. If the 15th falls on a holiday or weekend, the payment due date is the next business day.
